Sicily is an enigma; profoundly different from "the continent." It is beguiling, perplexing, paradoxical. The heritage of those who came to conquer and left their mark, from Phoenician to Arab to Spanish, is richly revealed beneath each layer of stone. There are opulent mansions, ravishing landscapes, proud characters and wonderful cuisine.
Sicily is home to the some of the best ruins anywhere, most dramatically sited overlooking the Mediterranean. We'll visit them all: The fifth century Temple of Segesta, one of the world's most perfectly preserved monuments from Antiquity; Selinunte's "immense heap of fallen columns"; the stunning Valley of the Temples in Agrigento (we'll also see them floodlight at night); the grand Ancient Roman Villa del Casale carpeted with the most magnificent mosaics in Western Europe (including the young women dressed in strapless bikinis that wouldn't be out of place on today's beaches); the Temple of Apollo on Ortygia Island; and the great Greek Theatres in Syracuse and Taormina.
All of this magnificent architecture is placed in the most stunning landscapes. We'll walk in the fields of ancient columns, on the black lava rocks of Mt. Etna and in olive groves and vineyards. We'll taste salt harvested from the sea, marsala from ancient barrels, fresh ricotta from the shepherds and arancini that we make ourselves.
And to conclude our island exploration, we'll spend three days in Malta, exploring the prehistoric ruins and the rich tradition of the Knights. |
